Flame
Resistant Garments – What you need to know!
Whether it be flash fire or an ark flash, both are
relatively rare, but when they do occur they can be devastating for all
concerned.
Fortunately, over the past three decades, the industries and
governments response to this issue has been very solid. Measures have been
taken to ensure that thermal protection is being used routinely in refineries,
drilling rigs, chemical plants and pulp mills for protection against this rare
but potentially deadly occurrence.
With the increase in demand for this protection, the
suppliers of this workwear have developed garments that are increasingly
functional, comfortable, affordable and suitable for the jobs being performed.
Manufacturers of protective clothing work with designers
that are concerned not only with the fit and feel of the garment but also the
safety and aesthetics of the garment. The garments are becoming more trendy and
do not look quite so industrial, more like regular sportswear. In some cases,
you can’t tell the flame resistant garments from regular garments unless you
look at the tag. The only difference you will notice is the price. Flame
resistant garments usually run at about two times the cost of regular cotton or
polyester workwear and Nomex IIIA garments can sometimes be up to four times
the price.
At this particular time, the worldwide production of cotton
has been severely compromised by unusual weather that has resulted in a global
shortage of cotton for the clothing industry as a whole. The result of this has
been an increase in cost of raw goods by as much as 35-50%. This price increase
is not intended to last for long, but it will certainly affect the cost of
flame resistant cotton and cotton blend garments for the rest of this year at
least. This worldwide increase in cost will be noticeable in all clothing until
the next growing season can be determined to be successful and able to supply
the market. The many different flame resistant clothing manufacturers will be experiencing
price increases throughout the year as their inventory of fabric declines and
they are forced to replenish their fabric at current market prices. Check with
your suppliers frequently so that there are no surprises.
With all this in mind, it is your responsibility to ensure
you know what you are buying, making sure the fabric you have chosen is
suitable for the work you will be doing, that the garment has the right
features to make your job easier, that it fit well so your safety is not compromised
and that you have looked around to compare prices and quality. Be sure to work
with professional suppliers that can guide you accordingly… Your safety
ultimately resides with you.
